Tuberculosis (TB) Test for your UK Visa Application

03-07-2016

If you will be studying in the UK for more than six months then you will require a Tuberculosis (TB) test for your UK visa application. Please check if your country requires you to have a TB test here.

You won’t need a TB test if you:

  • are a UK resident and haven’t been away for more than 2 years; or
  • have lived for at least 6 months in a country where TB screening is not required by the UK, and you’ve been away from that country for no more than 6 months.

How will I be tested for TB?

You will be given a chest x-ray and issued a certificate that is valid for six months. The certificate will be needed for the UK visa application.

To have a TB test you must see a clinician at an approved clinic, and complete a health questionnaire. The clinician will then decide if a chest x-ray is required. Once the clinician is satisfied that you do not have TB you will be issued with a certificate. You will need to include the certificate when applying for a visa.

If you are currently studying in the UK, but need to move schools part way through the school year, you do not need to be tested again if you have not been away from the UK for more than six months.

Please refer to the GOV website for details of the countries and full process of TB screening.
